Challenges Faced by Non-Binary Individuals in Sports

The sports world, much like other societal domains, is often structured in a binary way, thereby excluding non-binary individuals. These individuals may not identify strictly as male or female, or may identify as a combination of both. Unfortunately, 74% of non-binary people in Europe and North America have experienced harassment, discrimination, or verbal abuse. Gendered infrastructures such as bathrooms and locker rooms, gender-specific equipment, and sports rules that separate men and women create barriers that limit their participation and inclusion in sports.

Inclusion Initiatives at EuroGames Lyon 2025

EuroGames Lyon 2025, in accordance with the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is implementing initiatives to promote the inclusion of non-binary individuals. These measures include de-gendering locker rooms or at least providing dedicated spaces, offering a specific registration category with a dedicated podium, and allowing freedom of choice regarding equipment. These actions aim to create an environment where every athlete feels respected and comfortable, regardless of their gender identity.

Awareness and Commitment to Inclusion

In addition to infrastructure measures, EuroGames Lyon 2025 is also committed to raising awareness among sports clubs and participants about non-binary issues. Training sessions and workshops will be organized to educate and inform about the challenges and realities faced by non-binary individuals. By taking these initiatives, EuroGames aspires to set a standard of respect and inclusion, where everyone is free to engage in the sport they love without fear of discrimination or exclusion.
