🤼 Wrestling at EuroGames Lyon 2025: Tradition, Agility, and Strategy
The Wrestling competitions at EuroGames Lyon 2025 will take place at the Gymnase Maurice Scève on July 24 and 25, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, in collaboration with Paris Lutte, Paris Wrestling Club, and Lyon Saint-Priest Lutte.
Wrestling, one of the oldest sports, symbolizes agility, strength, and strategy. In each match, two athletes face off to gain control over their opponent without using strikes. The primary goal is to achieve a pin, immobilizing the opponent’s shoulders on the mat. If no pin is achieved, the winner is determined by a points system based on techniques (throws, controls, mat exits).
🤼 Match Durations
- U20 Category: 2 periods of 3 minutes with a 30-second break.
- Seniors Category: 2 periods of 3 minutes with a 30-second break.
Athletes must adhere to strict rules, including the prohibition of dangerous or unsportsmanlike behavior. Each match is held on a circular mat, supervised by a referee to ensure fair play and safety.
🤼 Disciplines
This edition of EuroGames 2025 will feature competitions in three major wrestling styles:
- Freestyle Wrestling: Athletes can grab their opponent’s legs for throws and controls.
- Greco-Roman Wrestling: Holds are limited to the upper body, focusing on throws.
- Women’s Wrestling: Similar to freestyle, offering a fair and competitive platform for female athletes.
🤼 Competition Format
- Fewer than 6 participants: Round-robin format (everyone competes against everyone else).
- 6-7 participants: Group stages followed by semi-finals and finals.
- 8+ participants: Single-elimination bracket with repechages to determine third place.
Age Categories
- U20: Born in 2005 or earlier
- Seniors: All participants over 20 years old
